Supported Tournament Formats

Chess Manager supports all five major tournament structures recognized by international arbiters:

Swiss System

Players with identical or closest scores are paired each round. No player is eliminated. Recommended for large player fields.

Round Robin

Every participant plays against every other participant. Ideal for small clubs, invitational tournaments, or scholastic leagues.

Single Elimination / Knockout

Losers are eliminated each round until a champion remains. Built-in automatic power-of-2 bracket validation ensures fair Round 1 byes.

Scheveningen System

Team vs Team format where every member of Team A plays against every member of Team B. Automated team size balance checks.

Adding Players & Live FIDE Rating Sync

Say goodbye to manual rating lookups on fide.com. Our engine syncs official ratings in real time:

  • FIDE ID Auto-Sync: Enter a 7 or 8-digit FIDE ID. The engine retrieves the player's official name, federation, and active ratings (Standard, Rapid, and Blitz).
  • Smart Time-Control Matching: If your tournament is 5-minute Blitz, the system pulls each player's official Blitz Rating. If classical, it uses their Standard Rating.
  • Bulk Excel / CSV Import: Upload your entry roster in seconds. The importer detects columns for Name, FIDE ID, Club, and Rating.
  • Chess.com Import: Import player ratings directly from active Chess.com usernames.
  • Public Self-Registration: Share your tournament link and let participants register themselves before the event begins.

Starting the Tournament & Bracket Verification

When all players are registered, click the green Start Tournament button. The system performs instant pre-flight checks:

Automated Bracket Warning Modal

In Knockout tournaments, brackets naturally require power-of-2 counts (4, 8, 16, 32, 64). If you start with a non-power-of-2 count (e.g. 10 players), the system pops up a transparent summary modal:

  • Identifies the next full bracket size (16 players).
  • Calculates the exact number of Round 1 Byes awarded to top-seeded players (6 Byes).
  • Calculates how many players compete in Round 1 (4 players playing 2 matches).
  • Lets the arbiter confirm with full clarity or pause to add additional players.

Swiss Pairing Engine & Dutch Algorithm

Chess Manager strictly adheres to international pairing regulations to guarantee fair, undisputed competition:

Zero Rematches

Two players are never paired together twice in the same event.

Color Balance

Alternates White and Black. No player receives the same color 3 times consecutively.

Optimized Floaters

When brackets have odd counts, the engine minimizes floaters and prevents consecutive floats.

Standard Buchholz (BH) Swiss Tournaments Sums the complete scores of all opponents faced throughout the tournament.
Sonneborn-Berger (SB) Round Robin & Swiss Sums the full scores of opponents defeated plus half the scores of opponents drawn.
Direct Encounter All Formats Evaluates the head-to-head match if all tied players faced each other.
Most Black Wins Tie-Break Resolvers Rewards players who achieved victories with the disadvantage of Black pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from arbiters, club directors, and tournament organizers:

Pairings follow official FIDE Dutch Swiss system rules. In Round 1, players are ranked by rating, split into top and bottom halves, and paired (player 1 vs player N/2 + 1). In subsequent rounds, players with identical match scores are paired together, color balances are strictly enforced, and repeat rematches are prohibited. Read our in-depth tutorial on Running a Swiss Chess Tournament for Beginners and Preventing Repeat Pairings.

Buchholz Cut 1 (BH-C1) sums all your opponents' final tournament scores, then subtracts the single lowest opponent score. This protects players from being penalized if one of their early opponents played poorly or withdrew. Learn the full mathematical breakdown in our guide to Calculating Buchholz Tie-Breaks Automatically.

Yes! Unlike legacy desktop software (such as Swiss-Manager or Swiss-Sys) that requires Windows desktop installations, Chess Manager is a cloud-native platform running 100% in your browser. Read our comparison of Pairing Software for Mac and Linux and Free Swiss-Manager Alternatives.

In Swiss tournaments with an odd number of active players, the pairing algorithm automatically awards a 1-point pairing bye to the lowest-rated player in the lowest score bracket who has not yet received a bye. In Knockout tournaments, byes are distributed to top seeds so subsequent rounds have an exact power of 2. See our detailed guide on Half-Point & Full-Point Byes Explained.
