If you have ever played in or directed a Swiss chess tournament, you have encountered the concept of a Bye. But what does receiving a bye mean for your standings, your rating, and your tie-breaks?
In this guide, we clarify the critical differences between full-point pairing byes, requested half-point byes, and knockout bracket byes.
1. The Three Types of Chess Byes
Pairing Bye (Full Point)
Score: 1.0 point
Awarded automatically by the pairing system when an odd number of players enter a round. Does not count toward FIDE rating calculations.
Requested Bye (Half Point)
Score: 0.5 point
Requested in advance by a player who cannot attend a specific round due to travel, school, or work conflicts. Usually restricted in final rounds.
Zero-Point Bye
Score: 0.0 points
Given when a player misses a round without notice, or when a player has exceeded the maximum number of allowable half-point byes.
2. FIDE Rules for Assigning Pairing Byes
To keep the competition fair, FIDE Dutch Swiss rules dictate strict rules on who gets the pairing bye:
- Lowest Score Group: The bye must come from the lowest active score bracket.
- Lowest Rating: Within that score group, the bye goes to the lowest-rated player.
- No Duplicate Byes: No player can receive a pairing bye more than once in the same tournament.
- Unrated Byes: A pairing bye is an unplayed game; it does NOT affect either player's FIDE rating.
3. How Byes Affect Buchholz Tie-Breaks
Because Buchholz tie-breaks sum your opponents' scores, having an unplayed bye game created mathematical complications in older pairing programs. Under official FIDE Tie-Break regulations (C.07), a virtual opponent score is assigned to an unplayed game to protect the player from suffering an unfair tie-break deficit.
