Tournament Performance Rating (TPR) is the standard metric used to judge breakthrough tournament performances, calculate Grandmaster (GM) and International Master (IM) norms, and award board prizes in team events.
1. The FIDE TPR Mathematical Formula
Under FIDE Handbook Section B.02, performance rating is defined as:
TPR = Ra + dp
Where:
- Ra (Average Opponent Rating): The sum of all opponents' ratings divided by the total number of games played.
- dp (Rating Difference from Score): The rating difference looked up in FIDE Table 8.1a corresponding to the player's percentage score (\(P = \frac{Score}{Games}\)).

3. Step-by-Step Practical Calculation
Example: 5-Round Swiss Event
A player faces 5 opponents rated 1800, 1850, 1900, 1950, and 2000.
- Average Opponent Rating (Ra): (1800 + 1850 + 1900 + 1950 + 2000) / 5 = 1900.
- Player's Score: 3.5 out of 5 points = 70%.
- Lookup dp: A 70% score corresponds to \(d_p = +149\).
TPR = 1900 + 149 = 2049 Performance Rating
