How to Organize a Small Chess Tournament with Live Standings

Whether you are hosting a community chess evening at a local cafe, a corporate chess lunch, or a weekend blitz battle with friends, running a small tournament should be fun—not a stressful administrative chore.

Thanks to smartphones and web tournament software, you no longer need to print pairing sheets, tape printouts to doors, or calculate Buchholz tie-breaks with a pocket calculator.

1. Setting Up in 3 Minutes with ChessManager

1. Go to Quick Tournament Setup.
2. Enter your tournament title (e.g. "Friday Night Blitz Open"), select Swiss or Round Robin, and pick your time control (e.g. 5+3).
3. Type or paste player names. If players have FIDE IDs, you can search and auto-fill their official FIDE Blitz or Rapid rating.
4. Click Start Tournament. Your round 1 pairings and board assignments are created automatically.

2. The Magic of the QR Code

Every tournament created on ChessManager Online has a public, shareable URL. You can project the screen on a TV or simply display the QR code on your phone or a printed paper.

Players scan the code with their smartphone camera and immediately see:

• Their current board number
• Their opponent's name and rating
• Whether they are playing White or Black
• Live standings, tie-breaks, and points updated the instant an arbiter enters a result
